In 1991, he was appointed chairman of the Tata Group, a position he held until December 28, 2012, when he announced his resignation. Ratan Tata, the man who started and once led the Tata Group, is widely regarded as one of the most successful businesspeople in India. On December 28, 1937, in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai, India), Ratan Naval Tata was born to one of the wealthiest families in the world. His parents, Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat, founded the Tata Group. When Ratan Tata was 10 years old, his parents divorced. Through the J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage, he was formally adopted by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata. Noel Tata, the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata, and Ratan Tata grew up together. Jamsedji Tata, his grandfather, was a leader in India's post-independence industrialization and the founder of the Tata Group.
The 84-year-old went to Riverdale Country School in New York City, Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, Campion School in Mumbai, Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and Campion School in Mumbai. After going to Cornell University and Harvard Business School, he did well. In 1959, Ratan Tata earned a degree in Architecture from Cornell University in the United States. He entered the architecture field immediately following graduation and remained there for two years. Both the group's management and the outside world, particularly the media, were caught off guard by this development.

When the company bought Corus, it became the seventh-largest steel producer in the world. Corus was Europe's second-largest steelmaker. Tata was given the responsibility of leading the floundering National Radio and Electronics Company Limited (NELCO) and succeeded in turning the company around. An extraordinary display of kindness and compassion, Ratan Tata waited outside the Taj Hotel after the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai to make sure that the victims were helped and given all the aid they needed. He also paid visits to the families of the roughly eighty workers who were hurt or lost their lives during the attack and in the years that followed.
